The world feels more divided by the day, sometimes by the moment. Families continue to face separation from loved ones, suffering, and trials. Yet scripture calls us to approach every situation with a heart of thanksgiving.

A Quote on Gratitude from "A Prayer of Gratitude" by Joshua J Masters

That doesn’t mean falling in love with the broken circumstances that stalk us. Rather, it means grabbing hold of the promises that are greater than our trials as we walk through them.

The prayer of gratitude below is drawn from fifteen promises of God found in the Bible. If we’re struggling to find that spirit of thanksgiving in our hearts, we can speak this prayer and meditate on the passages they reflect, asking God to reveal His hope in a way that draws us to a place of gratitude.

A BIBLICAL PRAYER OF GRATITUDE

Father God,
I will rejoice for the day you have given me,[i]
And give thanks for the work you’ve given me to do in that day.[ii]
For no matter what happens in these hours, Your kingdom cannot be shaken.[iii]

I give thanks because Your love endures forever.[iv]
You provide everything I need.[v]
You are my strength when I have none,
And you are my shield when I feel attacked.[vi]

I thank you because I can abandon my anxious thoughts,
For You offer a peace that I cannot understand in my darkest days.[vii]
You provide rest when I am burdened by life’s suffering.[viii]

I will seek a heart of gratitude.
I will be grateful that I am accepted.[ix]
I will be grateful I am being transformed.[x]
I will be grateful that I am loved,
And that you call me Your child.[xi]

Above all, I am thankful for Your Son,
Grateful that the Messiah gave up His divine privileges,
Took the humble position of a slave, and was born a human being,[xii]
All to rescue me from my own sin and darkness and reveal Your glory.
Who am I that He should think of me in His sacrifice?[xiii]
Yet, Your grace has found me.

I give thanks as I call upon Your name,
And share the good things You have done in my life.[xiv]
You are my treasure and I commit my heart to You,[xv]
With a grateful heart.

AMEN.
