This prayer is adapted from the author’s book, American Psalms, which teaches the reader how to pray for our country without the politics. Please use our Free Resources to join us in regularly praying for the nation.
Sovereign Lord,1
I come before you as our nation prepares to elect our leaders. Our hearts make our plans, but you direct our path.2 There is no government on earth you did not allow3—I pray, then, that we would be in Your will as we choose our leaders.
Between the pundits, talking points and negative advertisements, it’s easy to become cynical about our election process, but remind me of the great freedom I’ve been given in that process. May I not take for granted my right to speak directly into our country’s governance.
I also lift up the men and women who are running for office. It is a grueling process for the candidates and their families. May they seek you and have your protection through the integrity and honesty of their campaigns:4
For the LORD grants wisdom!
From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest.
He is a shield to those who walk with integrity.
He guards the paths of the just and protects those who are faithful to him.
(Psalm 2:6-8, NLT)
Direct my actions and guard my tongue5 in this election season as I trust in your promise:
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you and watch over you.
(Psalm 32: 8)
Lord, as so many challenge the integrity of those who are running, make me aware of my integrity.
Instruct the way I speak and the way I interact with others.
Counsel me in how to represent you in a divided world, especially in the coming weeks.
As I pray for this election, teach me to pray for revival and your will rather than a specific outcome.
Do not allow me to be swayed by partisanship or to become slothful in vetting our candidates. Reveal any ungodly bias in my heart before I cast my vote, and teach me to seek your wisdom over my own. May your will be done in this election, and may I be an instrument of your desire.
AMEN.

Always good words from you, sir. Thank you.
I typically focus on II Chron 7:14 when praying for our country. I ended the books of Judges today. If there’s one thing clear, it’s how important it is for a land claiming God’s grace to be repentant. I know God answers prayer, so it’s all good.
But I also know He responds when our spiritual responsibilities are in line with His Word.
Best blessings, Pastor Joshua
Amen to that, Warren. Those are perfect passages for where our nation is today. Thank you for praying with me for our country and thank you for your kind words.
Amen. Prayers are definitely needed. God is listening.
Amen! Praise God that He is a God who listens and hears our cries. May listen for His voice. Thank you, Melissa.
This is wonderful, Joshua. Sometimes we don’t know how to pray during challenging times. Thank you!
Thank you, Candyce. I really appreciate your prayers and kind words.
What powerful scriptural prayer guides you offer in the post. Thank you so much.
Thank you for the encouragement. I really appreciate it.
Such an important message and prayer for this time. Thank you for reminding us that as we pray for our leaders, we must also do our part to demonstrate those same actions we are seeking in those who lead. We can each make a difference.
So true, Katherine. When we pray, we should always be asking what God wants to change in our own heart.
Atta Gurl, Katherine!
Thank you for praying for our election. Thank you for praying for God’s will and God’s grace on our country. Thank you for praying for revival. I join in with your prayers to reach the throne of heaven.
You are welcome, Joanna. And thank you for joining me in prayer for our nation
Thank you for this, Joshua. I prayed as I read, and I found direction for continuing prayer as we enter into these next few weeks.
That is so encouraging to me, Jeanne. Thank you for praying with me for our nation.
I love this, Joshua. How we need to pray for our nation, the election, but above all else for God’s will and ways to override ours. And we must pray for revival without ceasing.
Amen, Pam. Thank you for your encouragement. When we learn to put God’s will above our own we see the Holy Spirit move in powerful ways.
I can’t vote in this elections, because I come from the UK originally I am living in the States, I am praying for this election though. Let God will be done on earth as it is in heaven, no corruption of voter fraud, protection for President Trump and his administration, peace on the streets, regardless of the outcome. The people behind all the riots be exposed for what they are doing, there money burn up with them. Throughout this though God will reign. I already seen answered to prayers that I have prayed concerning the Supreme Court Justice, Deborah ruled in Israel. I praise God that He is on the move.
Patricia, Thank you so much for praying for the nation and her leaders. May we see God’s glory revealed.
It’s about His Kingdom, we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers, and rulers in darkness, this battle is against light and dark, good verses evil, as long as saints who believe in Jesus stay on the same page spiritually we win. I see a lot of christian’s rising up and take back ground, that was given up to the enemy. Thank you for your site helpful resources to the Body of Christ.
Lots of prayers going up I think my friend. This one is certainly a blessing. Thank you for help clarify my plea. God’s blessings.
I am always so grateful for your comments and prayers. Yes, this is a time for us to call out in one Christian voice for God’s will and Christ’s revival in the hearts of our leaders.
