A Christian Devotional for Halloween.
Victory over the darkness is coming.
Halloween was once a festival based on superstition and the fear of death. It was a night when Celtic people tried to ward off evil and fight the darkness.
Halloween may have evolved into a night of candy, princesses, and Stormtroopers, but many people still live with those fears.
When it comes to literature, few pieces are more synonymous with Halloween than The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe. If you’re not familiar with the story, the character in Poe’s poem was lost to despair and haunted by his past. He is tormented by a black Raven who relentlessly taunts him with the word “Nevermore,” reminding him that he is trapped in his sorrow.
Unable to escape the Raven’s lies, the man surrenders to his fear and gives up all hope. The poem concludes with him saying that his soul will be lifted “nevermore.”
Many of us have been in that same place of despair. Our hurts and the pain of our pasts, like the raven, continually whispered the word “nevermore” into our ears. But when we learn to surrender our fears, anxieties, and past to Christ, the poem of our lives looks very different than that of Poe’s.
The poem in the video above is a testimony to that hope and a response to Poe’s dark bird.

If you think of the crying out of Jesus in John 12:44 as similar to a raven (which can be a match for the Greek, κράζω krázō), your poem flows beautifully with verses 12:45 through the end of the chapter. I came across your poem after studying chapter 12 of John and then wandering and wondering in my mind and fingers about Poe … following google to …. your beautiful poem. Thanks!!
Thank you, Ben. I am so encouraged by your kind words and insight. That is a very thought-provoking comparison and I am definitely going to spend time digging into those thoughts.
