The Billy Graham Association has called for a national day of prayer for our president today. There’s no denying that the political atmosphere in our country is contentious at best, but Christians are called to pray for our political leaders regardless of our own political views—or theirs. God can change your heart by praying for those who you consider unworthy of prayer. There are ways to pray for leaders you don’t agree with without compromising your beliefs. So regardless of your political views, please join me in praying for our president.
A PRAYER FOR PRESIDENT TRUMP
Father God, You are the God of Wisdom and the desire of nations.1 You are the King of kings and the Lord of lords;2 it is through Your grace alone that our nation has been established.3 May your name be praised throughout the United States.
You have commanded me to pray for those in authority, saying:
I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.4
To fulfill your purpose, I lift up the President of the United States in prayer. I ask for your hand of protection to be upon President Trump, his wife, Melania, and their family. Place Your heavenly armies around the White House and our nation.
May the President have access to Your wisdom through prayer and be strengthened by a desire to serve You. Send the Holy Spirit to be his comforter and chief advisor,5 for the President faces daily trials I’m incapable of appreciating. Grant him the gifts of leadership6 and wisdom,7 but above all, turn his heart toward you.
Allow Him to have a greater encounter with the Holy Spirit, and may that experience inform his decisions, leadership, and interactions with others.
Reveal my own unrighteous mindset toward our leaders, and give me a conviction to pray for them without bias. May President Trump seek your favor and be blessed; may he serve as an ambassador of your Kingdom as he leads our nation. Above all, may Your name be glorified in America as Your will is done. Amen.

Thank you for this reminder, Josh. Praying for others ALWAYS changes our hearts, whether we fully agree with that person on all matters or not. I’ve had to do this in social circles even in our community- I’ve asked God to show me his heart towards a certain person, which always increases compassion and empathy in my heart. And I agree- we should all be praying for the leadership of our country– no matter what side of the proverbial fence we may fall on. Great post.
Thank you, Lisa. I do the same thing. I often ask God to show me someone through His eyes instead of my own. I think that’s the key to praying for others with compassion, especially those we don’t agree with. That was a great comment.
A beautiful prayer, Joshua–Thank you! I appreciate the reminder that we need to pray for our leaders in spite of our agreement or disagreement with their beliefs and actions. I hope that our prayers can help us become a more loving nation.
I’m so grateful for your encouraging words, Katherine. Thank you.

Thank you for praying for our nation, Jeannie. God bless.
I read an article about this in the national news media this morning. Regardless of their take on it, I’m encouraged. National conversations about prayer is a good thing.

I completely agree, Candyce. Thank you.
Well said, as always, Pastor Joshua. There’s a reason I follow your blog and video casts so closely.
